DCNS landing grids enable a helicopter or a drone fitted with a harpoon to land or take off safely from the deck of a ship, with no assistance, even in rough seas and bad weather.

As soon as the helicopter touches the deck during landing, the head of the harpoon is engaged and automatically positioned into the grid. Once the pilot has activated the landing procedure, the harpoon clams immediately lock into the grid and the helicopter is then held down on the deck

During the take-off the harpoon holds in place until there is enough throttle and rotor pitch. The harpoon is then released instantaneously, allowing the helicopter to take-off immediately.

DCNS landing grids:

  • Are made from very strong steel. They are strong enough for even the heaviest helicopters to land safely: NH90, EH101
  • They comply with STANAG 1276 standard, making them compatible with a wide range of helicopters and rotating-wing drones fitted with a standard harpoon.
  • Are easy to fit on the deck of a ship using a lining or attachments.
  • Display low maintenance requirements.
  • Consist of only two parts:
    • a harpoon fixed beneath the helicopter casing
    • a grid fitted on to the ship's deck

The range of landing grids comprises 5 standard grids made of very tough steel to ensure maximum crew and equipment safety (harpoon fitted).

More than 300 landing grids have been designed and supplied by DCNS BU Propulsion to different customers in the last 30 years. More recently:

  • FREMM class frigates
  • Horizon class frigates
